About the BC Wildfire Service
The goal of the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) Prevention Program is to reduce the negative impacts of wildfire on public safety, property, the environment and the economy using the seven disciplines of the FireSmart program. The Outline
The BC Wildfire Service reached out to Tirion Safety Ltd to coordinate a range of program deliveries throughout the province, catering to participants from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of experience. At the time, the BC Wildfire Service was assessing numerous training topics related to driver and operator roles, aiming to enhance the operational safety and efficiency of its workers in their varied responsibilities.
The Solution
Tirion Safety Ltd collaborated with various BC Wildfire Service departments and locations to provide tailored training to each department across a broad spectrum of topics, including vehicle recovery, resource road safety, radio communications, ORV safety, trailer safety, and an internal train-the-trainer program for the largest Fire Centre in the organization.
For the BC Wildfire Service, it was crucial to implement programs crafted and overseen by the BC Forest Safety Council. The BCFSC stands as the foremost forest safety organization, closely linked with WorkSafe BC. These programs are developed in direct alignment with WorkSafe BC data and insights from industry experts to identify high-risk activities and establish methods to train participants in mitigating those risks.
While delivering standardized courses was straightforward, Tirion Safety Ltd and the BC Wildfire Service emphasized the importance of providing training that directly addressed the participants' activities, while maintaining clear competency assessments within the program's framework. The ability to adapt to clients' specific needs is vital for a successful program, yet equally important is ensuring consistency and uniform messaging across broader delivery scenarios in future programs.
The programs were highly regarded and successful, equipping participants with new skills, refreshing existing ones, and providing a clear understanding of industry best practices.
Delivering a wide range of training topics allowed the BC Wildfire Service to evaluate many training options that the BC Forest Safety Council has in it's training schedule.
